Ali Bongo has been elected as the new president of The Magic Circle, at the organisation’s annual general meeting.
He takes over from Alan Shaxon, who has held the role for the past five years. Bongo is best known for being magical advisor to Paul Daniels for more than 15 years and it was Daniels who nominated him for the presidency. It is the second time that the magician has stood for the post, which he will now hold for the next five years.
Bongo told The Stage: “I’ve been around a long time and I do a lot of work for the Magic Circle already and I felt that if I was president I could do more. I want to achieve a very friendly society and get magic back into the limelight.”
Jack Delvin was elected as vice-president. As well as being a performer himself, Delvin also hosts The Magic Circle’s School of Magic.
The Magic Circle was formed in 1908. It now has around 1,500 members in nearly 40 countries.
