Playwright Gray dies at 71

Playwright and diarist Simon Gray, author of works such as Quartermaine’s Terms and Otherwise Engaged, has died today at the age of 71.

Gray, who was also well-known for his self-effacing series The Smoking Diaries, had written more than 30 plays for both the stage and TV - many of his stage plays were directed by Harold Pinter. His 1984 play The Common Pursuit was revived earlier this year at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London, while Quartermaine’s Terms recently toured the UK in a new production from Bill Kenwright.

Gray was diagnosed with lung cancer last year.

A full obituary will appear in a future print edition of The Stage.
