The programme of events has been created in partnership with the People’s Palace Project and aims to celebrate the life of environmental activist Chico Mendes and the Quadrilha dance form.

As previously announced, the focal point of the season will be the Young Vic’s Christmas show, also entitled Amazonia, which will be written and directed by Brazilian comedian and actor Pedro Cardosa and Paul Heritage of the People’s Palace Project.

The production will feature three of Brazil’s most celebrated screen and stage stars - Wagner Moura, who was the recipient of the 2008 Golden Bear Award, Renata Sorrah and Lazaro Ramos.

The show will be followed in January 2009 with a symposium on the theme of arts and climate change. The Young Vic hopes to secure Brazilian Culture Minister and leading musician Gilberto Gil as a keynote speaker.

Meanwhile, the theatre’s community summer production Festa! is to be given two performances on August 16. It is being created with members of Spectaculu, Rio de Janeiro’s theatre and film design school, and will feature 92 local residents from Lambeth and Southwark.
