Channel 4 drama The Mark of Cain was named best television film at last night’s 48th Monte Carlo Television Festival.

Made by Red Production Company, the show was written by Tony Marchant and focused on the treatment of Iraqi prisoners at the hands of British soldiers.

It beat a number of shows nominated from around the globe, including fellow UK nominee Secret Life, made by Kudos Film and Television, also for Channel 4.

Other UK winners of the evening included The IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade, who picked up the award for outstanding actor, and Anna Madeley, star of ITV’s period drama Affinity, who won the award for best performance by an actress.

The awards honour television programming displaying special artistic merit and exceptional talent.
