A ministerial reshuffle has seen East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell become Northern Ireland’s second Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure.
Campbell replaces his DUP colleague Edwin Poots whose year in office saw record amounts of spending on the arts in the region but found him mired in controversy over the appropriate site for a new national football stadium and a proposed Irish Language Act.
The new post will be the third held by Campbell who, besides being an MP, is also a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly. In 2001 he was Minister of Regional Development for just six days.
Citing his interests as “sport, music and reading”, Campbell said: “Arts and culture make a vital contribution to our quality of life as well as attracting inward investment and tourism. Investment in arts and culture also supports local jobs and stimulates consumer spending.” He also said he would be “looking in particular how the Department for Culture, Arts and leisure can support the creative industries”.
