Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps actress Sheridan Smith is to join Alan Davies for a special one-off episode of Jonathan Creek, set to be broadcast on BBC1 later this year.

The special has been written by David Renwick, who created the series originally. The show last ran on BBC1 five years ago.

In the one-off, master of illusion Creek, played by Davies, is called to investigate mysterious disappearances in a gothic house.

Smith will play Joey Ross, a sceptic who assists Creek in his attempts to unravel the mystery.

BBC controller of comedy commissioning Lucy Lumsden said: “We’re delighted to have Jonathan Creek back on BBC1 and with the addition of Sheridan Smith we should be in for a real treat.”

The show was commissioned by controller of BBC fiction Jane Tranter.
