UK actors Ben Daniels, Jenna Russell and Mark Rylance, currently starting on Broadway in revivals of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Sunday in the Park with George and Boeing-Boeing respectively, were among the winners of the 64th annual Theatre World Awards, honouring Outstanding Broadway or Off-Broadway debuts for the just completed 2007-2008 theatrical season.
The three were among 12 recipients so honoured this season. First presented in 1945, the Theatre World Awards are among the oldest theatrical awards in the United States, and are considered one of the most prestigious in the industry. The 12 winners selected this year will receive their honours at an invitation-only ceremony at Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theatre on June 10.
Daniels has also been nominated for a Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Award for his role in Les Liaisons. He previously won an Olivier Award in 2001 for his work in the Arthur Miller drama All My Sons and was also an Olivier nominee for Never the Sinner.
Russell has also been nominated for a Tony, Drama Desk and Drama League Award for Sunday in the Park with George, a production which originated at the Menier Chocolate Factory in the UK. She previously won an Olivier for Sunday in the Park with George in 2007 and was an Olivier nominee for the role of Sarah Brown in the musical Guys and Dolls.
Rylance won the 2008 Drama Desk Award for his role in Boeing-Boeing and is up for a Tony Award for the same role. Among his competition in the latter category will be Patrick Stewart (Macbeth), Rufus Sewell (Rock ‘n’ Roll), Laurence Fishburne (Thurgood) and Daniels.
