Former Critics’ Circle president Hall dies aged 72

Leading showbiz writer and former president of the Critics’ Circle William Hall has died at the age of 72. He had been suffering from cancer.

In a career that spanned 40 years, Hall interviewed some of Britain and Hollywood’s biggest stars and he also wrote acclaimed biographies of Frankie Howerd, Michael Caine and Norman Wisdom.

He began his career in 1953 on the Fulham Chronicle before becoming film editor of the London Evening News, a post he held until the paper closed in 1980. More recently, he was the film critic of the Camden Journal.

He died on May 20 and is survived by his wife Jean. A full obituary will appear in a future issue of The Stage newspaper.
