Benchmark system planned for touring companies

Published Tuesday 20 May 2008 at 18:35 by Lalayn Baluch

Equity ARC: Equity’s Independent Theatre Arts Committee is to create a benchmark system for touring companies to ensure that actors and stage managers get at least the minimum wage for their work, with adequate health and safety provisions.

According to ITAC committee member Andrew Macbean, the system will outline a code of best practice and will clarify what a company’s responsibilities are towards staff.

He added that publicly funded organisations should not be allowed to support “sweatshop conditions” created by careless producers. Fellow ITAC representative Frances Rifkin said that some form of regulation was long overdue.

A motion urging Equity to highlight and challenge illegal and unsafe practices in outdoor theatre, as well as lobbying venue providers including the National Trust and local authorities, was unanimously passed at the union’s annual representative conference.
