Phillips receives CBE honour

Carry On actor Leslie Phillips has been awarded a CBE from the Queen.

The veteran actor, 84, picked up the honour yesterday at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace.

Phillips, who received an OBE in 1998, was born in Tottenham, north London, and trained at the Italia Conti stage school.

He served in the Durham Light Infantry from 1942-45 until he was invalided out suffering from shell shock and resumed his dream of becoming an actor.

In the fifties, he appeared in the likes of Brothers in Law and The Man who Liked Funerals.

He became well known for his appearances in the Doctor films and also appeared in a number of Carry On films, including Carry on Nurse in 1959.

Phillips joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1996 under Adrian Noble, playing roles such as Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor.

More recently, he has appeared in films such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Venus.
