Paice pulls out of Gone With the Wind with throat infection

Leading lady Jill Paice has been forced to pull out of two performances of Gone with the Wind due to ill health, only a day after the show opened in the West End.

According to a spokesperson for the production, Paice, who is playing the lead role of Scarlett O’Hara, has been diagnosed with a “bad throat infection” and will miss both of today’s performances at least. Her understudy Savannah Stevenson will take over for the two shows.

The spokesperson added: “We are hoping that she will be back tomorrow.”

Gone with the Wind, which is directed by Trevor Nunn and also stars Darius Danesh, opened yesterday evening at the New London Theatre, but received a decidedly hostile critical reception.

Stage critic Mark Shenton complained that “this numbing musical…collapsed in on itself… marooned in a no-man’s land of generic melodies and leaden, unconvincing drama.”
