Jude Kelly is to direct a production of The Wizard of Oz at the Southbank Centre this summer, marking the first time the show has been staged in London in 20 years.
The show will be the RSC stage version of the story, which closely follows the original film based on Frank Baum’s book and was first performed in 1987. It will have a cast of 30 and will feature live music from a 20-piece band.
Kelly, artistic director of the Southbank Centre, said the show fulfilled the “evergreen role of a true classic”.
She added: “The Wizard of Oz has left an indelible impression on over four generations. From its beginning as an American folk-fairy tale, it has grown into something that lies at the very heart of what we feel about courage and homecoming.”
The set and costumes will be designed by Michael Vale, associate artist at the Southbank Centre.
To coincide with the show’s run, the Southbank Centre will be turned into an emerald city, with the Royal Festival Hall bathed in green lighting at night. There will also be a yellow brick road guiding visitors to the venue.
The show will run from July 23 to August 31. Press night will be on Tuesday July 29.
