Exclusive: Andrew Lloyd Webber has reunited with Ben Elton on the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera.
Elton, who is best known for his work on Blackadder, wrote the book and lyrics for Lloyd Webber’s 2000 production The Beautiful Game and has also written the books for We Will Rock You and Tonight’s the Night.
It is understood that he will have a book writing credit on the Phantom sequel, for which The Little Mermaid lyricist Glen Slater will supply the words and Lloyd Webber the music. Lloyd Webber had reportedly been working with Frederick Forsyth on the book in the early stages of the show’s development.
A spokesman confirmed: “Yes, Ben Elton is the book writer - he has done the synopsis for the story. However, Glen Slater will be writing the lyrics.”
No date has been set for the production, which is in development. Hairspray director Jack O’Brien is lined up to direct.
