BBC1 costume drama Cranford has picked up seven nominations for this year’s Bafta Craft Awards, with the Corporation receiving 28 nods in total.

The writer of the Judi Dench drama, Heidi Thomas, has been nominated in the writer category alongside Tony Marchant for Channel 4’s The Mark of Cain, Jimmy McGovern for The Street on BBC1 and Steven Moffatt for Doctor Who.

Cranford is also up for awards in the categories of costume design, editing, make-up and hair design, original television music, production design and sound.

Other BBC shows nominated for the awards, which recognise talent behind the camera, include Oliver Twist, which has been nominated in the costume design category alongside BBC4’s Fanny Hill and Miss Marie Lloyd - Queen of the Music Hall. BBC1’s Five Days is up against Channel 4’s Boy A and The Mark of Cain and ITV1’s Persuasion in the director category.

Channel 4 shows dominate the break-through talent category, with Mark O’Rowe, writer of Boy A, competing against the writing team of Skins and Patrick Reams, the writer, director and producer of A Very British Sex Scandal.

In total, Channel 4 has received 19 nominations, compared with ITV’s six.

Elsewhere, social networking site Bebo has received three nominations in the new media categories, with online drama Kate Modern up for the interactive content award against Spooks Interactive, Emmerdale Online and Skins.

This year’s Special Award honours the writing duo David Croft and Jimmy Perry, who penned the sitcoms Dad’s Army, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum and Hi-de-Hi!

The Bafta Craft Awards take place on Sunday, May 11 at the Dorchester in London.
