The House of Lords has rejected calls from religious activist group Christian Voice to prosecute the BBC under blasphemy laws for screening Jerry Springer - the Opera.
The Lords’ Appeal Committee has refused a petition for appeal from the Christian organisation, on the grounds that it does “not raise an arguable point of law of general public importance”.
Last year, The City of Westminster magistrates court and the High Court similarly rejected demands for a prosecution of BBC director general Mark Thompson and Jerry Springer producer Jon Thoday, of Avalon.
Stephen Green, national director of Christian Voice, branded the House of Lords’ decision a “blatant, shameless political manoeuvre by a God-defying elite intent on looking after their own”.
