Royal Television Society nominees announced

Penelope Wilton and Janet McTeer will go head to head for the best actress gong at this year’s Royal Television Society Programme Awards.

Both are nominated for their performances in the BBC1 show Five Days and will go up against Sally Hawkins for her role in ITV’s Persuasion.

In the best actor category, David Tennant has been nominated for Recovery and Doctor Who, against Matthew Macfadyen, who is up for his performance in Secret Life, and Andrew Garfield, nominated for Boy A on Channel 4.

Boy A is also up for the best single drama award, against The Mark of Cain and Stuart: A Life Backwards. Boy A writer Mark O’Rowe is up for the best drama writer award against Gwyneth Hughes, who wrote Five Days, and Heidi Thomas, who wrote Cranford.

Channel 4’s Britz, BBC1’s Five Days and ITV’s Torn are nominated in the drama serial category, while Doctor Who, Skins and The Street are all up for the drama series award.

In the award for best children’s drama, Desperados, My Life as a Popat and The Sarah Jane Adventures are all nominated.

Elsewhere, Strictly Come Dancing will go up against QI and The Armstrong and Miller show for the entertainment award, while Peter Capaldi, Jack Dee and comedy duo David Mitchell and Robert Webb are nominated in the best comedy performance category.

The Thick of It, Peep Show and The Mighty Boosh are up for the best situation comedy or comedy drama award and Coronation Street, Holby City and The Bill will battle it out for best soap.

The awards will be presented on Wednesday March 19 at the Grosvenor House Hotel.
