The second series of the show, which is made by Company Pictures and is less than half way through its run on ITV1, regularly pulls in more than 5 million viewers.

Work will start on the third instalment later this year and it will be screened in 2009. The new series will also include input from viewers, who are being asked to design one of the show’s monsters.

Audiences have until April 7 to submit creature ideas to www.itv.com/primeval and the winner will see their design brought to life on screen.

Executive producer Tim Haines said: “By giving people the opportunity to design a monster for the third series we are creating a chance for them to be more involved and feel closer to the programme.”

ITV director of drama Laura Mackie added that the competition will “put viewers at the heart of the action”.
