Trevor Nunn is to direct a televised version of the RSC’s recent production of King Lear, starring Ian McKellen.

The recorded version of the show will be filmed at Pinewood Studios and broadcast on Channel 4 in December.

Most of the production’s original cast members are expected to be involved with the programme, which is being produced by The Performance Company.

Chris Hunt will co-direct with Nunn and co-produce with Richard Price. Price previously worked with Nunn when he recorded his National Theatre production of Oklahoma! in 1999.

The RSC production of King Lear was first performed at The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon in April 2007, before beginning an international tour and a West End run at the New London Theatre.

Filming of the recorded version began last week. It was ordered by Channel 4 commissioning editor for arts and performance, Jan Younghusband.
