Rupert Penry-Jones is to star in a new ITV crime thriller about a modern day Jack the Ripper that will form part of three new dramas being lined up for the autumn.
Penry-Jones will play a detective in Carnival Films’ Whitechapel, which has been written by Ben Court and Caroline Ip and which sees a team of detectives trying to track down a murderer who appears to be copying the crimes of Jack the Ripper.
ITV has also lined up The Children, starring Kevin Whately and Geraldine Somerville, which has been written by Lucy Gannon and which focuses on step families.
The three-part series begins with the discovery of an eight-year-old murdered in the garden of her home, where everyone is a suspect.
It is being made by Tightrope Pictures, the company behind The Girl in the Cafe.
The autumn will also see the return of Sean Bean drama Sharpe after a gap of two years.
Sharpe’s Peril is being made by Celtic Films Entertainment and Picture Palace Films and has been written by Russell Lewis.
