Published Friday 28 December 2007 at 16:45 by Alistair Smith

Tony Award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth, who created the role of Glinda in the Broadway musical Wicked, will make her English National Opera debut as Cunegonde in Robert Carsen’s new production of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide.

The ENO co-production, with the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris and La Scala, Milan will open on June 23 at the London Coliseum for 13 performances.

Chenoweth has previously sung the role of Cunegonde at Lincoln Center with The New York Philharmonic.

Rumon Gamba, who recently conducted Candide with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, conducts the production. Choreography is by Tony Award-winner Rob Ashford, who is also making his ENO debut. British tenor Toby Spence will sing the title role. Further casting is yet to be announced.
