English National Opera is to become the first UK opera house to offer a complete production online when it video-streams a performance of its new staging of Carmen in November.
The company has teamed up with BBC Radio 3, which will show the opera on its website.
Viewers will be able to see the production from multiple angles, giving what the BBC said would be “unprecedented access” to ENO’s show.
ENO artistic director John Berry said: “Through this streaming, many people across Britain will have the opportunity to sample ENO’s bold and adventurous work. We are delighted to be entering a co-production partnership with Radio 3 and we hope it will lead to more exciting projects in the future.”
BBC Radio 3 controller Roger Wright said using technology to give “audiences a richer experience” is something the BBC is keen to explore further.
ENO’s production of Carmen is in repertory at the London Coliseum, and is part of the Sky Arts season.
The opera can be viewed online on Saturday, November 3 at bbc.co.uk/radio3 or eno.org/carmen from 6.30pm.
