High School Musical 2 draws a million child viewers in UK

Published Monday 24 September 2007 at 12:30 by Matthew Hemley

High School Musical 2 attracted record audiences for Disney Channel UK at the weekend, pulling in 1.74 million viewers over the show’s four broadcasts.

The 6pm premiere of the film on Saturday was watched by 750,000 children aged between four and 15 - more than any other channel in that time slot. The figure puts the film in the top five children’s movies shown across all channels so far this year.

Disney Channel UK managing director Rob Gilby said: “Kids around the world are as enthusiastic as ever for High School Musical and these UK viewing figures for the sequel show there is continued appreciation for the music, the characters and the stories kids find relevant to their lives.”

Of the total 1.74 million who tuned in over the four broadcasts, 1 million were children.

High School Musical 2 received record-breaking figures when it premiered in the US last month, with 17.2 million viewers tuning in, making it the most watched cable show on US television ever.
