Scottish Arts Council and the development agency Scottish Screen could be merged to create a new body under legislative plans unveiled by First Minister Alex Salmond yesterday.
The new organisation would be formed by the passing of the Creative Scotland Bill, one of 11 new bills announced by Salmond today as part of the Scottish National Party’s programme of legislation.
Called Creative Scotland, the new body would work across “all creative sectors to realise the benefit of the arts and culture” and would be ‘charged with identifying and developing talent. It would also assist “all branches of the arts, film and the wider screen industries”.
Unveiling the Creative Scotland Bill today, Salmond said: “I believe that this bill will pave the way for a much stronger creative sector in Scotland that will serve our economic interests and promote our culture for decades to come and we will also be informed by the Scottish Broadcasting Commission on the vital role of broadcasting in our national and cultural life.”
The idea of merging the two bodies was first put forward under the previous administration’s draft bill, Scotland’s Culture, which was published for consultation in 2006.
