London’s Menier Chocolate Factory has announced that Jerry Herman’s tale of drag queens and moral crusaders, La Cage aux Folles, will be its 2007 Christmas show.
The production, directed by Terry Johnson and designed by David Farley, is based on a play by Jean Poiret. It was initially adapted into a film with the same title in 1978, and was later remade as The Birdcage, starring Robin Williams, by American director Mike Nichols.
La Cage aux Folles will open on December 3, and run in the theatre until March 8. The Chocolate Factory’s past two Christmas musicals, Sunday in the Park With George and Little Shop of Horrors, both transferred to the West End once they finished at the venue.
The original stage version premiered at the Palace Theatre on Broadway in 1983. It ran for 1,761 performances and won six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book of a Musical. It last came to London in 1986, for 301 performances at the Palladium Theatre.
