Multimillionaire philanthropist Donald Gordon has had the main auditorium of the Wales Millennium Centre named after him, in honour of his £10 million donation to the project.
Gordon, who also gave £10 million to the Royal Opera House last year, said he was delighted to have his name given to the 1,900-seat theatre, which is due to open on November 26.
He added: “I am thrilled to have my name associated with this wonderful new world-class theatre for the performing arts and look forward to enjoying some brilliant performances here in the future.”
The £104 million venue will be home for several companies including the Welsh National Opera, Academi and Urdd Gobaith Cymru. It also has a 250-seat studio theatre in addition to the main auditorium.
Chairman David Rowe-Beddoe said the board and the executive were unanimous in their decision to name the theatre after the South African businessman.
“We are deeply grateful to Donald Gordon for his valuable philanthropic gift to the centre,” he said. “This gift of £10 million has enabled us to significantly reduce our capital funding gap and will ensure that ticket prices for world-class productions during the opening years can be supported.”
