West End’s The Drowsy Chaperone to close in August

Published Tuesday 10 July 2007 at 17:40 by Lalayn Baluch

Producers of The Drowsy Chaperone have decided to close the show two months after it opened at the Novello Theatre.

The final performance of the production, starring Elaine Paige, will be on August 4. It will have been running for less than three months.

Producer Kevin McCollum commented: “London ticket sales have been slower than needed to sustain a longer run at the Novello. Whilst regrettably having made the decision to close the show, we are pleased to have brought this wonderfully original new musical to the West End with a first class company, who have brought to life a production we are incredibly proud of.”

The Drowsy Chaperone premiered in Toronto, Canada and had performances in Los Angeles, before it opened at the Marquis Theatre in New York in 2006.

It will continue to be performed on Broadway, and a tour of the show will also return to Toronto. International companies are preparing to take it to Japan and Australia.
