Head of comedy Plowman to leave BBC

BBC head of comedy Jon Plowman is leaving the corporation after 27 years to focus on programme making.

Plowman, who joined the BBC in 1985 and was made head of comedy entertainment in 1994, was behind shows such as Absolutely Fabulous, The Office and The League of Gentlemen.

He will leave the post later this year and has already lined up a slate of programmes on which he will be a freelance executive producer.

He will work on Beautiful People, a new comedy by Jonathan Harvey, which is based on the memoir Nasty by Simon Doonan and will also executive produce Psychoville, a dark comedy starring The League of Gentlemen’s Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith for BBC2.

Plowman said: “I have decided to return to the coalface and give someone else a go at one of the best jobs in television.

“I hope to carry on my relationship with the BBC and to continue to make great stuff both here and elsewhere.”
