Stephen Sondheim is to be the subject of an in-depth interview on BBC Radio 3, in which he discusses his influences and his work.
The 77-year-old will be interviewed by Norman Lebrecht in a 45-minute show from his New York home, where he has lived all his life. He will talk about how lyricist Oscar Hammerstein influenced his career and what it was like to work on West Side Story, alongside Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents.
Sondheim will also discuss his subsequent musicals, including the forthcoming film version of Sweeney Todd, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp.
The programme will go out on August 6 at 9.45pm.
Other people to be interviewed as part of the series, called The Lebrecht Interview, are director Peter Sellars and conductor Franz Welser-Most, former music director of the London Philharmonic.
