Bernard Manning dies

Published Monday 18 June 2007 at 18:50 by Alistair Smith

Controversial comedian Bernard Manning has died aged 76 in North Manchester General Hospital, where he was being treated for a kidney problem.

Manning set up the Embassy Club in Harpurhey with his father in 1959 and shot to fame in the seventies on ITV show The Comedians, along with Frank Carson and Stan Boardman.

The comedian’s style of politically-incorrect homour was often regarded as controversial, with critics branding it sexist and racist, and in 2002 he was banned from performing in Weymouth, where councillors were concerned his act might breach race laws.

A full obituary will appear in a future edition of The Stage.
