ITV variety show Britain’s Got Talent proved a ratings hit last night, with the series’ first live show reaching an average of 7.8 million viewers.
The talent competition, produced by TalkbackThames for ITV1, dominated the schedules, seeing off both a new series of Dalziel and Pascoe on BBC1, watched by 5.2 million viewers, and Channel 4’s struggling reality series Big Brother, which managed just 2.3 million.
The daily scheduling of the show has seen audience increasing since it debuted on Saturday to 4.8 million viewers. The show has also proved a success on the internet, with clips from the series on video sharing site YouTube. An audition clip of six-year-old Connie Talbot singing Over the Rainbow has so far been viewed more than one million times.
Britain’s Got Talent concludes with a final on Sunday, with the winner awarded £100,000 and a spot at the Royal Variety Performance. A proportion of the proceeds raised from telephone voting will be donated to the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund.
