Comic Amstell creating sitcom of his early years

Stand-up comedian and television presenter Simon Amstell is developing a sitcom based on his own upbringing in a Jewish family for BBC2.

The series, which is understood to have the working title Grandma’s House, is being made by The Vicar of Dibley producer Tiger Aspect.

The series is one of a number of shows Amstell is working on as part of a development deal he has with the production company, which is also behind hits such as The Catherine Tate Show and BBC1’s Robin Hood.

On top of the sitcom, Amstell is believed to be developing an entertainment show with the company.

A source close to Amstell’s sitcom said it will be made up of 30-minute episodes, but added the show had not yet been formally commissioned.

She said a read-through of one episode had been well received by the BBC.

The series is being overseen by Tiger Aspect’s head of comedy Sophie Clarke-Jervoise, who executive produced BBC2’s new comedy series Roman’s Empire.
