BBC to move 1,500 staff members to Manchester

Published Thursday 31 May 2007 at 17:35 by Matthew Hemley

Around 1,500 BBC staff from five key departments will be moved to Manchester’s mediacity:uk development after the Corporation sealed an agreement with the site’s developer, Peel Holdings.

Terms of the deal were approved by the BBC Trust today, meaning departments including BBC Children’s, BBC Radio Five Live and BBC Sport will relocate to the Salford Quays site.

BBC director general Mark Thompson said: “The modern, multimedia broadcast and production centre in Salford will shift the BBC’s centre of gravity away from London, bringing a range of creative benefits to us and, I hope, helping us to better reflect and represent the whole of the UK.”

On top of the 1,500 members of staff set to leave London, 800 staff currently based at the BBC in Manchester will also move to the new site.

BBC chief operating officer Caroline Thomson will be the executive director responsible for implementing the BBC’s move to Salford.
