Evans walked away with the prize for Music Radio Personality of the Year - seeing off competition from BBC Radio 2 colleague Jonathan Ross - and the Entertainment Award for his drivetime show, beating the likes of Heart 106.2’s Jamie Theakston and BBC Radio 1’s breakfast presenter Chris Moyles.

Classic FM picked up the award for UK station of the year, whilst BBC Radio 4 was triumphant in the drama category.

It won the Drama Award for Lorilei, a BBC radio drama production about a woman whose child is murdered, but who appeals for the culprit to avoid a death sentence.

The drama beat the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Breakfast with Mugabe, which was produced by Catherine Bailey on BBC Radio 3.

Meanwhile, the late John Peel was awarded the Broadcaster’s Broadcaster Award, voted for by his industry peers. Peel, who died of a heart attack in 2004, worked in radio for almost 40 years.

Other winners included the Today Programme on BBC Radio 4, which won the Breakfast Show Award, whilst its host John Humphrys won the News Journalist of the Year award.

BBC Radio 1 presenter Colin Murray won Music Radio Personality of the Year.
