BBC to offer on-demand TV service online

Published Monday 30 April 2007 at 17:25 by Matthew Hemley

BBC programmes such as EastEnders will be made available on-demand after the Corporation’s proposals to launch an online catch-up service were given the green light today.

The player will offer viewers the chance to catch up on missed programmes for seven days after they have first broadcast on TV and will begin later this year.

It was given the go-ahead by the BBC Trust, which held a public consultation on the player’s provisional proposals that attracted more than 10,500 responses.

BBC trustee Diane Coyle said: “The consultation has demonstrated considerable public support for the on-demand proposals.

“The Trust is satisfied that the BBC’s new on-demand services will create significant public value with limited market impact.”
