High-profile authors including Alexander McCall Smith, Ian Rankin and William Boyd have been signed up by Scottish Opera to create new work for the company’s 2007/8 season.
The writers will team up with composers including Craig Armstrong, Patrick Doyle and Ben Twist to make five specially commissioned, 15-minute operas.
Their work will be presented next March in two venues new to the company, Oran Mor in Glasgow and The Hub in Edinburgh.
It marks the first stage of a four-year development plan for the project, entitled Five: 15.
Other highlights of this year’s programme include productions of Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Mozart’s Seraglio, Verdi’s Falstaff and Judith Weir’s A Night at the Chinese Opera.
