Published Friday 20 April 2007 at 16:40 by Matthew Hemley

Music hall’s legendary star Marie Lloyd will be recreated by actress Jessie Wallace in a drama to be broadcast on BBC4 next month.

Miss Marie Lloyd - The Queen of the Music Hall will air on May 9 and will also feature Robin Hood actor Richard Armitage in the role of Lloyd’s first husband, Percy Courtenay.

The 80-minute drama will feature some of Lloyd’s most famous songs, including A Little of What You Are, and will trace her rise to fame against the backdrop of her troubled private life.

The production is being made by Hat Trick and the cast also includes The Thick of It’s Matthew Marsh, and Tom Payne from Skins.

It will run as part of BBC4’s Edwardian Season in a 9pm slot.

BBC4 controller Janice Hadlow said securing Wallace was a “real coup” and added: “She will bring something very special to the role.”
