BBC Radio 3 controller Roger Wright is to become director of BBC Proms when Nicholas Kenyon leaves the Corporation later this year to become managing director at the Barbican Centre.
Wright, who has been controller of the station since 1998 and is responsible for editorial strategy, will take over the post in October.
He will be responsible for the management and artistic planning of the event, while retaining his role at Radio 3.
BBC director of audio and music, Jenny Abramsky, said Kenyon had been an “inspired and innovative” champion of the Proms for 11 years, but added: “Wright is a brilliant controller and I am delighted he will bring his creativity to the BBC Proms.”
The Proms enters its 113th season this summer and will feature eight weeks of music events from a range of ensembles and orchestras.
