Budget’s education rise is ‘good news’, says arts council’s Hewitt

Published Wednesday 21 March 2007 at 17:15 by Alistair Smith

Arts Council England chief executive Peter Hewitt has welcomed the increased education funding in today’s budget announcement and has called on the government to “similarly recognise” the arts at the forthcoming Comprehensive Spending Review.

“The arts council works with the education sector in a variety of ways and would like to do so more closely in the future, so it is good news to see that this budget includes a healthy increase in funding for education,” said Hewitt.

“We will continue to make a robust case to government for the arts to be similarly recognised when the remainder of the results of the Comprehensive Spending Review are announced in the autumn.”

Today’s budget announcement by Gordon Brown revealed that education spending in England will rise from £60 billion this year to £74 billion in 2010.
