Lloyd Webber decides Master and Margarita “undoable”

Andrew Lloyd Webber has confirmed that he has abandoned his attempt to compose a musical version of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov.

The composer had previously said that he was looking to have his adaptation of the novel finished and ready for production by the end of 2008. However he has now admitted that he has abandoned the project.

He told The Stage: “I’ve decided that it’s undoable. It’s just too difficult for an audience

to contemplate. It’s a very complicated novel.”

The news comes soon after Lloyd Webber revealed that he was to start work on a sequel to Phantom of the Opera, which will be set in New York.
