MP Swire proposes motion criticising live music Licensing Act

Published Friday 9 March 2007 at 16:10 by Nuala Calvi

Shadow culture secretary Hugo Swire has proposed an Early Day Motion expressing concern about the impact of the government’s 2003 Licensing Act on live music.

The motion criticises the loss of the old ‘two in a bar rule’, which allowed one or two musicians to play live without the need for a licence.

It also points to the additional costs created by the legislation for local authorities and venues wishing to apply for an entertainment licence under the act.

Swire’s intervention follows an online petition signed by more than 46,000 people on the Downing Street website, complaining about the “inappropriate regulation” of music and dance.

The e-petition has now reached number four out of more than 4,800 subjects.
