ITV is showing faith in its new comedy and drama offerings announcing that it has ordered second series of sci-fi series Primeval as well as Saturday chat show Al Murray’s Happy Hour and sitcom Benidorm.

Primeval, which follows a team of scientists as they travel through time and battle prehistoric and alien monsters, has been billed as the network’s answer to Doctor Who. While ratings don’t match those of its BBC rival, the programme has proved a popular addition to ITV1’s Saturday night line-up, getting ratings in excess of six million.
Nick Elliott, director of drama for ITV, said: “Primeval has had a wonderful response both from the public and from the press. We’ve opened up a new slot and a new family audience on Saturday night for ITV and the decision to recommission was not a tough one.”
Meanwhile Paul Jackson, who is director of entertainment and comedy, has decided to give Benidorm - his first sitcom commission since taking up the position - another series. The move comes despite a lukewarm reception from viewers and a harsh response from critics.
Jackson explained: “The decision was made after the fourth episode as it became apparent that the series maintained healthy ratings against some tough competition. I am thrilled, we had such a great cast involved and the writer Derren Litten is one of the finest comedy talents I’m come across in years.”
Murray’s Saturday night vehicle has proved popular with audiences and the decision to recommission the show indicates the broadcaster’s continuing keeness to work with the comedian. He also has a new sketch show in development.
