Top television actor Derek Waring has died of cancer at the age of 79.

Waring was best known for his comedy roles in series such as ITV’s George and Mildred and BBC’s Moody and Pegg. He also starred for three years as Detective Inspector Goss in Z Cars and made guest appearances in Callan, The New Avengers and Sherlock Holmes.
Born in London in 1927 he trained at RADA and in the sixties became a stalwart of the Royal Shakespeare Company. While working with the RSC he met and married actress Dorothy Tutin.
He went on to play leading roles in the West End in shows such as Cowardy Custard, Sextet, Cards on the Table and The Boy Friend.
His recent stage work had included George Bernard Shaw’s You Never Can tell at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, Dear Charles at the Yvonne Arnaud in Guildford and a national tour of the Susan Hill thriller, The Woman in Black.
He died on February 20. He is survived by his two children, Amanda and Nick (also an actor).
