EastEnders star Jessie Wallace is being lined up for a BBC comedy, marking her first move into the genre.

A source told The Stage: “She really is a very talented performer and she has a great sense of comic timing. The whole thing is still in the early stages of development but it should be good fun.”

Later this year, she will appear alongside Robin Hood’s Richard Armitage in a BBC4 show detailing the life of music hall singer Marie Lloyd. She is also in talks to appear in a Corporation drama set in the in fifties as a mum on the run.

• Billie Piper is to star in a Channel 4 adaptation of best-selling book Belle du Jour, playing the prostitute who became famous by writing a blog about her sexual exploits.
