Laura Michelle Kelly to star in The Lord of the Rings

Olivier Award winner Laura Michelle Kelly and Royal Shakespeare Company stalwart Malcolm Storry will join original Toronto cast members for the UK transfer of the musical adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.

The first major production of JRR Tolkien’s classic trilogy receives its European premiere this summer with a cast of more than 50 actors including Kelly, the originator of the title role in Mary Poppins, as Galadriel and Storry playing Gandalf. Many of the original actors will reprise their roles from the Toronto production - Frodo will be played by Brit actor James Loye and Michael Therriault, who was a Dora Award winner in Canada, features again as Gollum.

Director Matthew Warchus commented: “We will be presenting a hybrid of text, physical theatre, music and spectacle never previously seen on this scale. To read the novel is to experience the events of Middle-earth in the mind’s eye; only in the theatre are we actually plunged into the events as they happen.”

The Lord of The Rings will open at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on June 19, following previews from May 9.
