Kelly “stunned” by Meyer-Whitworth Award for Osama the Hero

Dennis Kelly has won this year’s Meyer-Whitworth Award for new writing for his play Osama the Hero, which premiered at Hampstead Theatre.

The commentary on post-9/11 Britain, set in a run down housing estate, was praised by judges for being a “powerful, disturbing play full of surprise”.

Kelly, whose latest work Love and Money is currently playing at the Young Vic, said he was “stunned” when he heard he would be receiving the £8,000 prize.

“I didn’t know I was up for it,” he said. “I got a call out of the blue and I thought, it’s the arts council - I haven’t filled out some form properly. So I was quite pleased to find out it was an award.”

Davey Anderson was named runner-up for his play Snuff, which was produced at the Arches Theatre in Glasgow in 2005.

Arts Council England recently announced that it would no longer be administrating the Meyer-Whitworth Award, although it will continue to be funded by the Royal National Theatre Foundation.
