ITV1 looks upmarket with Wuthering Heights adaptation

ITV is adapting Emily Bronte’s popular gothic novel Wuthering Heights for the small screen, in a further push to move its drama output more upmarket.

The three-hour production is being penned by Peter Bowker, best known for shows such as BBC1’s Dennis Potter-style Blackpool and A Midsummer Night’s Dream from the Shakespeare Season.

ITV controller of drama Laura Mackie, who commissioned the show, said: “Wuthering Heights is one of the most haunting and passionate novels in English literature, and Heathcliffe and Cathy are two of the most memorable characters of all time. We’re sure that Peter’s fresh approach to the adaptation will delight the ITV1 audience.”

The show, which is expected to broadcast in 2008, is being produced by former ITV executive Damien Timmer for indie Mammoth Screen.
