Blanchett has stressed that the role is “no dalliance” and will become her new full-time job, although she and Upton will use three months each year to pursue other projects.

She is currently preparing to direct her first project for the company later this month - Harold Pinter’s A Kind Of Alaska. One of the actress’ earliest acting roles was for the company 13 years ago in a production of Oleanna.

The pair replace Robyn Nevin, who will leave her post after eight and a half years.
