Orange Tree, Arches and Tricycle vie for Empty Space Awards

Published Tuesday 3 October 2006 at 12:15 by Alistair Smith

Richmond venue the Orange Tree Theatre, the Arches in Glasgow and the Kilburn-based Tricycle are among the nominees for the Empty Space/Peter Brook Awards 2006.

The three organisations will battle for the £2,000 studio theatre award, while Southwark open air venue the Scoop, Sheffield Studio Theatre and new children’s venue the Unicorn will compete in the ‘up and coming’ category for a prize of £1,500.

Meanwhile the Mark Marvin Rent Subsidy Award will be decided between King’s Head Theatre Productions’ Peter Pan, Shapeshifter’s King Arthur, Verb Theatre’s Limbo: Stories from 7/7, Look Theatre Productions’ Not the Love I Cry For and Accentuate’s Jamie the Saxt. The winner will receive £1,500 and unlike the other categories the award is given to a specific production, rather than a venue.

Awards founder Blanche Marvin said that she wanted to have more regional applications from companies wanting to transfer to the capital in coming years. She added: “Next year I hope that people from all over the country will apply for the Mark Marvin award. Those of you who want to come to London to perform but can’t afford the rent, please apply for this award.”

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Theatre Museum on November 7.
