Ben Ayrton has been appointed director of the National Association of Youth Theatres replacing Stuart Hawkes who left the 22-year-old NAYT in August after five years.
Ayrton said he joins the flagship organisation for people working in youth theatre at a time when he believes its provision in the UK is “unrivalled around the world”.
He continued: “I hope to improve on this even more through our programmes of work, support and advice, training and projects. I would like to get to know all the current and future membership well, listen carefully to what they have to say and, together, dream big dreams and make them happen.”
The director has had a long association with the company, stretching back to before he started a career that has focused on young people’s theatre development and work with under-represented communities.
“Sixteen years ago my life was changed as a direct result of attending an early gathering of youth theatre leaders co-ordinated by the organisation. Since then, with NAYT’s constant guidance and support, I have been fortunate enough to have enjoyed a challenging and rewarding career and had my eyes opened to the many possibilities and experiences being associated with it can bring,” said Ayrton.
“NAYT’s vision is one in which I believe utterly and I am very determined to help lead the company forward with the energy it so richly deserves.”
Ayrton arrives at NAYT after four years as artistic director of Theatre Venture, east London’s award-winning theatre arts, training and research organisation.
