Glasgow casino will create up to 2,000 jobs

Top Scottish football club Rangers has unveiled plans to build an £80 million Las Vegas-style casino featuring live entertainment and creating up to 2,000 jobs.

The project, part of a £120 million plan to regenerate ground opposite the club’s Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, is being backed by US gambling billionaire Sheldon Adelson, owner of the Venetian Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The complex, with the casino and live entertainment, would also include flats, shops, an hotel and leisure facilities.

Plans will be lodged with Glasgow City Council in late spring, and if the application is successful, Rangers aims to have the complex operational by autumn 2007 - taking advantage of forthcoming changes to gaming legislation in the UK.

Nick Peel, Rangers retail and brands director, said: “We have been aware of the impending changes to gaming and gambling laws for some time and we have spent the last year exploring the opportunities in the market.”

Adelson has confirmed that his company - Las Vegas Sands Inc - is in talks with several other British football clubs.

The company’s president Bill Weidner, said: “The idea is to bring the traditions of Rangers to a wider audience. We will combine live entertainment with dining opportunities to provide a unique experience. We are giving Rangers our knowledge and experience to turn those great traditions into a worldwide brand.”

• Donald Emslie, chief executive of SMG Television, is to be the next chairman of Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre. He takes over from Michael Shea who steps down next month after nearly six years in the post. Emslie is currently the chairman of the ITV Council, the GMTV Board, and sits on the board of Scottish Screen.
